Maude DeBerry Celebrates 100th Birthday!

Maude Lorraine DeBerry, “Aunt Maude” as she is known by everyone close to her, was born in 1908 to Herring and Cennie Hurst. She was one of seven children, with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Her mother passed away when Maude was 3 years old and she was raised by her father with the help of her grandparents. In 1932 she married Haskell DeBerry and lived in Jackson, TN for several years until moving back to Savannah.

Although they had no children of their own they were surrounded by a host of nieces and nephews and neighborhood children which they were very fond of and close with. The DeBerry’s built a grocery store in the Northwood Community where they ran their store for over 25 years. Maude’s husband passed away in 1997 after 65 years of marriage. She continued to live on her own until 2003 when she moved to an assisted living community and then to the Hardin Medical Center Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She has belonged to the Robertson Chapel Methodist Church for 75 years where she was an active member for many years. She belonged to the Sunshine Home Demonstration Club where she was a 50-year member. She enjoyed quilting with the ladies at church, crocheting and other needlework for many years.

Congratulations to a wonderful and sweet lady on her 100 th birthday, December 19 th, 2008!
