The Heroes of Hardin County: A Glimpse into the Lives of Hardin County EMS

Lisa Peterson

It was a terrifying moment when Anthony Jones fell critically ill in his sleep. His wife, Sandi, a registered nurse, recalled the harrowing experience. “He became sick in his sleep and aspirated into his lungs. When I realized what was happening, he was already turning blue. I managed to get his airway open somewhat, and he pinked up slightly, but I knew I had to call 911 immediately.”

Within moments, Paramedic Michael Armstrong and AEMT Brittany Devore Murphy from Hardin County EMS arrived on the scene. “They got to us so fast, and I was beyond grateful,” Sandi said. Anthony’s oxygen levels were plummeting, and his heart rate was dangerously high.

“Anthony was purple, and his oxygen stats were falling.” Sandi recalled. “But Michael and Brittany remained calm and focused. They worked tirelessly to secure his airway, and because of them, Anthony is alive today.”

Once stabilized, Hardin County EMS transported Anthony to a waiting air ambulance helicopter, which had been alerted as soon as paramedics assessed the severity of his condition. Their swift action and expertise made all the difference in a life-or-death situation.

Even after being airlifted to the hospital in Jackson, Anthony remained unresponsive and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit. He was placed on a ventilator for more than 48 hours before finally regaining consciousness—his first response was a simple but powerful thumbs-up to his nurse.

“I want everyone to know just how critical Hardin County EMS is when it comes to saving lives in emergency situations,” Sandi emphasized. “I truly believe God put Michael and Brittany right where they needed to be to save Anthony’s life. They took action immediately, right there on the spot, before transporting him. More importantly, they kept me informed every step of the way as he was being flown to Jackson, Tennessee. That meant the world to me, and I am forever grateful to Paramedic Michael Armstrong and AEMT Brittany Devore Murphy of Hardin County EMS.”
